PACKstory: The Three Pillars of Excellent Packaging Design

Most consumers don't communicate their dissatisfaction with a product's packaging because they're busy worrying about mortgages, picking up their kids after school, getting ahead at work, and other more important issues. However, good packaging is one of the primary reasons a consumer will choose to purchase a product a second time - if the packaging is easy to open, perceived to be durable and sturdy, and easy to control the product pour, they’ll be far more satisfied with the overall consumer experience.

So, if one of the aims of package design is to create this positive experience for the consumer, are there common characteristics that can be found in some of the industry’s most successful packaging concepts?

Weatherchem believes so. As the company works with dozens of companies using packaging to boost shelf impact and consumer convenience, Weatherchem sees the best designs revolving around three pillars of excellent packaging design: User Convenience, Safety, and Shelf Impact.

Nothing is more convenient than a product that simply does what it should, and Weatherchem's wide array of dispensing closures ensures both liquids and solids pour smoothly, food is kept fresh long after the container has been opened, and products are easy to open, close and dispense by consumers both young and old.

In terms of security, all of Weatherchem’s closures bear in mind the needs of a wide range of consumers. Integrated liners, overwraps and Weatherchem’s “audible snap” are all techniques used to preserve freshness and provide tamper-resistance reassurance. The trick is to keep the closure simple and functional while ensuring safe, repeated usage.

Last and certainly not least is the package’s shelf impact, the ultimate objective of every consumer good marketer. A dispensing closure must play an important role in boosting package appeal, and should be designed to be sleek, elegant, eye-catching and even include custom colors or logos, ensuring it stands apart and gets noticed.

Always bearing in mind these three pillars of excellent packaging design (convenience, safety, and shelf impact), Weatherchem strives to innovate within its self-imposed and very high quality level of design and implementation…

The company's new PB series offers clean, fluid dispensing and a contemporary look for today's challenging colour cosmetic market.

These days, it has become quite popular to add skin care ingredients with organic and preservative-free elements into foundation, in order to ensure there is no oxidation. The net result is that more and more, formulas are becoming delicate. Sunrise’s airless bottles provide the correct packaging for liquid foundation, featuring airless dispensing with a soft and easy stroke, precise dosage control, and metal spring design that avoids contact between the product and mechanism, avoiding any possible chemical reactions.

In addition, the airless system reduces residual ingredients and ensures hygiene.

Sunrise Pumps has developed a new airless and dispenser system geared toward liquid foundation, which tends to be thicker than other sorts of liquid personal care or cosmetic products. Premi specialises in customised glass and plastic primary packaging for the beauty industry. Under the terms of the agreement, Quadpack will support Premi’s European expansion plans, while Premi will help extend Quadpack’s stronghold in Italy.

Quadpack CEO Tim Eaves explains the logic behind the partnership: “Our global network offers Premi an established infrastructure into Europe. In turn, Premi will help us break into the fragrance market, while bringing some exciting new additions to our skin care product portfolio.”

Premi’s bespoke service and innovative technology and design have placed the company in a leadership position in the Italian cosmetics packaging market. With an in-house logistics department, over 200 proprietary moulds and a number of exclusive distribution agreements in place, Premi is poised for growth beyond its domestic market.

Premi president Alesandro Prestini stresses the synergy between the two companies: “Premi and Quadpack have matching values. We operate on a basis of total transparency with our partners, as well as our customers, seeking to build relationships that last. This is an excellent foundation upon which to expand our operations. Together, we can go further, quicker. And, as we say in Italy, ‘L’unione fa la forza’, or ‘United we’re strong’.”

Premi and Quadpack will continue to service their existing client bases as before. However, clients will now have access to the expertise and complete product ranges of both companies.

Burgopak has created a simple, efficient range of packaging solutions utilising its patented slider system that represents its core product offerings at the most cost-effective prices.

By working closely with manufacturers to utilise automated processes and optimise material usage, cost prices have been reduced in some cases by as much as 40%.

'Burgopak 2GO' has been developed as the overarching brand for this optimised range. The name places emphasis on the quick and easy takeaway nature of the system and combined with a simple colour palette with bold numeric coding and features on each pack, it creates a logical catalogue of products in order to simplify the ordering process.

Visiting Burgopak’s website, customers can see the complete catalogue. It’s also possible to order a sample or submit a quote request for any of the products featured in the catalogue.

Toray Plastics (America), Inc. the only United States manufacturer of precision-performance polyester, polypropylene, and bio-based films, has announced that of all this year’s recipients of the Environment Council of Rhode Island’s Senator John H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Awards, it received the highest honor. The annual awards are given in memory of the late governor and U.S. Senator’s dedication to preserving the environment and to honor Rhode Island organizations that have worked to continue that legacy. Paul Urick, Vice President of Production and Safety, Toray Plastics (America), Inc., accepted the award on behalf of Toray at a reception held on May 4 at the Providence, Rhode Island Marriott Hotel. The council also granted awards to Rhode Island’s Appalachian Mountain Club trail committee volunteers, the Steel Yard Renewal project of Providence, and the Westerly Innovation Network.

Toray’s comprehensive sustainability initiative, begun in 2004, is guided by a six-point environmental mission: prioritize environmental preservation; help prevent global warming; achieve zero emissions of environmental pollutants; promote recycling; contribute to social well-being through environmental- improvement technologies and products; and raise employees’ environmental awareness.

“This award means a lot to Toray, and we are very grateful for the recognition,” says Rick Schloesser, President and CEO, Toray Plastics (America), Inc. “Eight years ago we launched our sustainability initiative and have never wavered in our commitment, nor will we. It is truly gratifying to know that the results of our efforts extend far beyond the bounds of our 70-acre campus and are having a positive effect on the state as well as the global community.”

Among Toray’s many environmental achievements are the launch of a three-acre solar farm, the largest such farm in Rhode Island; the reduction by 41 percent of VOCs at its facility by the diverting of emission streams to a regenerative thermal oxidizer; the diversion of 1000 tons of non-hazardous waste from landfill and its shipment to a waste-to-energy plant; the installation plant-wide of high-efficiency lamps and motion detectors that turn lights off and save 3.16 million KWHs annually; and the recycling of 285 tons of wood, 154 tons of mixed metal, 65 tons of cardboard, 60 tons of paper, bottles, and cans, 156 tons of aluminum, nine tons of used oil, six tons of oil absorbents, and 700 tons of PP and PET scrap, annually.

Sunrise Pumps’ new airless bottles, AJ series with airless dispensing pumps that provide companies a new option for body care products. Whereas many companies providing airless solutions top off at a 150ml capacity, the new bottles and pumps are available in sizes of 200ml, 250ml, and 300ml. The dispensed dose is also slightly larger, a perfect 0.65cc, rather than the standard 0.5cc squirt.

The bottles offer a great alternative to clumsy cream jars, providing all the benefits of an airless container in a larger format. The product can be dispensed through the airless dispensing pump system rather than being scooped out by hand. This ensures products are applied in their purest form without contamination from everyday dirt and germs on hands.

This high-performance airless dispensing pumps are spring outside design with “snap on” technology that allows easy, high speed filling with no need for specific filling equipment.

(PTI), Ohio, has established a Mocon, Inc. certified permeation testing laboratory at its facility in Yverdon.

PTI has a global reputation as a thought leader in package development engineering. With many major brand owners on its client list, its new Mocon certification will allow the company to offer expanded testing and analysis capabilities.

PTI-Europe will now offer oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor permeation testing for rigid, semi-rigid and flexible packaging materials and finished packages using Mocon’s highly-sensitive Ox-Tran® and Permatran® units.

“Mocon is recognized worldwide as the leader in permeation testing instrumentation for food, pharmaceutical, beverage, medical, etc., applications. Our association with this well-respected company will now enable PTI-Europe’s brand owner customers to have one-stop access to the gold standard in permeation testing,” said Thierry Fabozzi, managing director, PTI-Europe.

In addition to the state-of-the-art equipment, certification means that PTI-Europe technicians have been trained on Mocon corporate test lab methods/protocols and record keeping to ensure quality and equivalency.

The facility also will target multinational brand owners who want to make sure that the testing standards they have established in other parts of the world can be repeated in Switzerland.

“Mocon certification assures that companies using PTI-Europe’s facility will get the same level of service and quality they would find at any Mocon laboratory anywhere in the world,” said Alan Shema, product manager for consulting and testing services, Mocon. “We plan on offering this program to other laboratories and institutions in Europe, as well as worldwide.”

At the end of 2010 Bericap opened a new production site in Singapore with the goal of successfully advance business in a central location in Southeast Asia and to improve customer service which up until that time was handled from China or other Bericap locations.

During the first year in particular, an experienced team of Bericap employees from China and Germany was on location in a supportive role to ensure Bericap’s high quality and efficiency.

In Singapore closures are mainly manufactured for the chemical, technical, and edible oil sectors for export customers in Australia and mainly in Asia. This year the production of beverage closures for Thai customers is slated to be expanded.

The location, with 35 employees, has a large enough area to expand the previous product program and thus in 2012 to double the production of the first fiscal year.

Ironbridge Brewery in Shropshire, UK, has teamed up with Petainer, the specialist plastics packaging technology business to supply a new high-quality English lager in lightweight, recyclable Petainer Kegs. The brewery is targeting sales in the keg beer market through mail order deliveries.

Petainer Kegs manufactured in PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) have been chosen because they are more environmentally-friendly, lighter and less expensive than conventional metal kegs. They are ideal for the mail order business because they do not need to be returned to the brewery when empty – they can simply be crushed and put into the normal plastics recycling system.

Ironbridge uses traditional brewing methods to produce beers and lagers in casks, bottles, mini casks, polypins and now plastic kegs. The company offers its new high-quality Ironbridge Craft Gold – a 4.3 per cent alcohol continental-style lager – in 20-litre Petainer PET kegs.

Petainer Kegs are available in four sizes – 15, 20, 30 and 40 litres. They are designed for one-way use and have low-cost Micro Matic-compatible fittings which allow the containers to be connected to existing standard tapping systems.

In comparison with metal containers, Petainer Kegs offer substantial benefits to breweries, fillers and other users. These include lower costs and lower environmental impacts.

Petainer Kegs can be supplied either as complete, ready-to-fill containers or as preforms which are blown to full size on or near the site where they are filled. This further reduces their environmental impact and gives them a clear advantage over metal kegs and other plastic formats.

Andy Carter, Petainer’s regional sales director for the UK and Ireland, said: “Companies like Ironbridge recognise that these lightweight, one-way PET containers open up new channels and market opportunities. Using Petainer Kegs makes it practical and economical to expand into business sectors and markets which would not be feasible with metal kegs.

The company has launched a complete new lightweight 330ml clear PET bottle.

Co-founder of Shaken Udder, Jodie Farran, commented: "With all the excitement this summer, we thought we should celebrate being a British milkshake. All our shakes use only the best quality, fresh, British milk and only the very finest ingredients, like real strawberries, Belgian chocolate pieces and real vanilla beans that you can see in the shake.”

All the up-market retailers now stock Shaken Udder milkshakes. With brand recognition so important these days, the new PET bottle really stands out on the retail shelf.

Simone Gill, Key Account Manager at Graham Packaging said, "This is a brand new account for us, we worked closely with Jodie Farran and her team to deliver a new, stylish, embossed bottle and together with the wrap around label featuring a Union Jack, bunting and crowned funky cows the overall effect has achieved real shelf appeal. The Graham design team created brand new custom moulds to help create better branding for the four flavours, Chocolush, Vanillalicious. Strawberry Stash and Top Banana. The 330ml tactile bottle has a 38ml neck finish, which makes it easy to drink straight from the bottle and ideal for a healthy lunch accompaniment. The brief from our initial meeting with the client to come up with an alternative solution has been achieved, we are delighted with the way the new project has come to fruition."

Graham Packaging's design team not only produce bespoke PET bottles but they also have a variety of Graham standard bottles that can be supplied from stock from any of the manufacturing sites in Europe.

The Shaken Udder brand of top quality milkshakes has redesigned its milk churn bottles with the help of Graham Packaging, to capitalize on the patriotism of the forthcoming Jubilee, the Olympics, Para Olympics and European Football Championship.
The new Sanitized antimicrobial protection package, from Switzerland’s world-leading producer of antimicrobial hygiene function and material protection for textiles and plastics, completes the Sanitized silver-based product range of natural and safe active ingredients. These ingredients continue to perform after regular and lifetime cleaning measures and inhibit germ growth for optimum hygiene and to prevent unpleasant odors around the clock even when in contact with humidity.

The new Sanitized silver-based antimicrobials are unique in the speed at which they become active in combination with low application concentrations; contributing factors to the additives’ excellent price/performance ratio. The patented technology of silver encapsulated in a glass ceramic material, in combination with a low particle size of the product, delivers one of the highest levels of transparency which, when used in coatings, means quality and aesthetics of the end-use application are not compromised. This technology is effective against a large number of bacteria and remains stable at temperatures up to 500°C—far beyond any organic active compounds.

The new products are compatible with a wide range of polymers, in particular Polyolefins, Polystyrene and Polyurethanes, and work also in powder and liquid coatings. The new Sanitized silver-based antimicrobials are ideally suited for applications in a wide range of dynamic and demanding industries and medical applications. Due to their process stability they fit perfectly as a masterbatch (MB) for molding processes.

This level of flexibility and robustness means that applications such as coatings on furniture and vinyl flooring as well as fibers for carpeting, bedding, mattress covers and pillow filling work easily well alongside cleaning aids such as brooms, mops and cloths.

For packaging films where the highest levels of hygiene and protection are paramount, through to non-woven materials that offer security and comfort in automotive seating and interior coverings, Sanitized offers the well-known and accepted protection properties with the added values of speed and economic sustainability. In the world of personal-care, items such as tooth brushes made from hard injection molded plastics can receive the same level of protection as sanitary ware, ranging from basins, toilet seats to bath tubs and shower cubicles.

The use of silver as an effective antibacterial agent has been known to man since Roman times. In the last 50 years, Sanitized AG has introduced a number of silver-based antimicrobial products that have contributed to our health and well being and can be found in a wide range of applications from fibers to coatings as well as a wide range of molded polymers.

“Silver products have an excellent reputation for a wide range of performance characteristics. The new Sanitized Silver products provide a package of benefits that ensure fast and durable antimicrobial protection while remaining economically sustainable without compromising aesthetics and performance,” comments Maria Toscan, Product Manager Polymers at Sanitized AG.
