For the packaging buyer, this means added costs related to extra materials and a risk in design flaws where the three pieces don’t mesh perfectly.

TKPC has elegantly sidestepped this issue by inventing a new line of roll-on dispensers that are blow-injected around the application sphere, such that the sphere is nested perfectly and directly in the bottle without the need for an additional fitment. The ball moves easily within its housing, with no reduced capabilities from the consumer’s point of view. The packaging is also lighter, more durable, and is easily colour customized - the colours of both the sphere and the bottle can be changed to suit the client’s needs.

Available in a range of sizes (0.4inch/1.0inch/1.14inch/1.4inch spheres and bottles) the components can be purchased together or separately and special, customized orders are accepted.

The company also produces traditional roll-ons which retain certain advantages, such as being able to pair plastic sphere and fitment with a prestige glass receptacle, for high-end or premium products. The new roll-on line does not seek to replace other roll-on formats, it simply adds a cost-effective solution to its existing gamut of products. Many multinational enterprises, such as PZ Cussions, SaraLee, Henkel, AVON, SPH and more have already signed on, lured by the new product’s reduced cost and quick lead time.

One of the catches of roll-on dispensers is that they require at least three pieces to function correctly - a product receptacle, an application sphere and a fitment to house the sphere and connect it to the bottle. elegant, neutral and developed for the world’s most challenging formulations – has been chosen by the international personal care product firm ANNAYAKE, for its launched Blanc Japan Whitening Serum, a skin preparation with consumer appeal in China, Japan, India and beyond.

The elastomer- and metal-free Nea lotion pump is engineered to provide the completely neutral formula flow such skin preparations require, thanks in part to the fitting of a glass ball within the mechanism to eliminate formula discoloration. Further, the Nea’s advanced ergonomics and aesthetics combine to enhance the overall end-user experience with silky smooth operation.

“Our sleek Nea pump opens exciting new product development opportunities,” said Virginie Lemeunier, Product Manager – Lotion, Rexam Personal Care. “In this case, ANNAYAKE’s use of the Nea underscores the great potential for advanced dispensing technology in the accelerating skin lightener market, which some industry analysts predict will reach global sales of $10 billion by 2015.

“This category growth -- dependent on dispensers capable of handling such advanced formulations -- will be driven by new applications for men, as well as women, and for increased application in the general body care category, as well as for the face,”

The elastomer- and metal-free Nea lotion pump is engineered to provide the completely neutral formula flow such skin preparations require, thanks in part to the fitting of a glass ball within the mechanism to eliminate formula discoloration.

“This category growth -- dependent on dispensers capable of handling such advanced formulations -- will be driven by new applications for men, as well as women, and for increased application in the general body care category, as well as for the face,” said Julie Vergnion, Product Manager, Rexam Personal Care Division. “Our long-standing dedication to pump performance and commitment to enhanced functionality results in complete consumer satisfaction and stronger brands through the design of quality products.”

According to Vergnion, certain key characteristics in the design of Rexam quick-prime packaging date back more than 15 years. “The secret lies in our ability to optimize the configuration of the pump which is entirely contained within the bottle neck, and to design a venting hole ensuring controlled pressure equalization. The dip tube also plays a role in priming, even though it is ‘invisible.’”

“A perfect example of this expertise,” she said, “is our ultra-low profile quick--priming XD-11 fragrance pump, which fits completely within the bottle neck. In combination with our invisible dip tube, all the consumer sees is the fragrance. Yet despite this sophisticated design, this dispenser is extremely easy to fit onto the bottle, without special equipment.”

“Most consumers have little idea of the many operations taking place in sequence between the first press on the actuator and the first release of fragrance or lotion,” Vergnion said. “Initially, the pump is full of air at standard atmospheric pressure. Upon actuation, the air in the pump is compressed by a piston. When it reaches the bottom of the stroke, a priming valve opens allowing this compressed air to escape and the pressure in the pump returns to atmospheric pressure.”

When the pump actuator is released, the valve closes, the piston rises and the internal volume increases, creating a drop in air pressure to below the atmospheric pressure within the bottle. This difference in pressure draws the fragrance or lotion into the dip tube and then into the pump. This process is repeated until the pump is full. Then, certain operating processes change because the valve opens under the pressure created in the pump: pressing the actuator produces the spray or delivers the dose of lotion.

“The high output of our pumps results in quick priming with just two to three strokes in the case of our XD-11 fragrance pump,” Vergnion said. “It is the rapid opening and closing of the valves at the correct times that results in fast and easy priming, which consumers appreciate.”

“In addition, conventional dip tubes mar the appearance of bottles. This is why complete transparency of dip tubes has long been a dream for brand owners. First announced in 2006, the light refraction properties of the Rexam ‘invisible’ dip tube render it virtually undetectable, combining superior functionality and good looks,” Vergnion said.” Its refractive index renders it undetectable once it is full, which is easily achieved on packaging lines, greatly improving the overall aesthetics of the packaging” she explained.

“Quick priming, smooth operation, refined and precise output and aesthetics that open new design possibilities are the hallmark of our perfume and lotion pump range,” she said. “Our hard work over the years results in unprecedented convenience for the end-user which is a major benefit to brand owners.”

Thus, it is this expertise in the art of priming, acknowledged by cosmetics customers worldwide, which has enabled Rexam Personal Care to offer lotion and fragrance pumps which are quick-priming and are able to deliver today’s advanced formulations efficiently, smoothly and precisely.

Whether it is the neat and neutral NEA lotion pump selected by Natura for its DIVERSA Liquid Foundation, or the ultra-low profile lubricant-free XD-11 fine mist pump chosen by Lolita Lempika for its new SI LOLTIA fragrance, Rexam designs its new pumps for fast priming.

“There is an art to designing and developing pumps that offer quick priming operation and retain flawless quality for the entire life of the product,” said Julie Vergnion, Product Manager, Rexam Personal Care Division.

The technique, which gives the can a matt finish, is applied after the body of the can has been printed and gives the package a premium look and feel, compared to the standard cans consumers are more familiar with.

When asked why the brand chose to use this particular technique on its UK packaging, Andy Thompson, Senior Brand Manager at Coca-Cola Enterprises, commented: “Matt-over varnish is used as standard on our Appletiser range across the rest of the world and we wanted to bring the UK products in line with the premium look and feel we achieve globally.”

He went on to say “For us, the can works well because it is a convenient package and is widely accepted by our consumers. Think of Sprizzerol and you can’t help thinking of fast cars, yachts and all that is Mediterranean – be it hot summer parties on the Cote D’Azure or après-ski in a snow-coved chalet.

Find yourself at any event that oozes style and glamour such as celebrity charity events, open air opera, motor racing meetings or film premieres and you are likely to find this Italian aperitif that is produced with high-quality Italian wine, selected aromatic herbs, and natural ingredients to a secret family recipe.

So when Paolo De Martin, grandson of Edoardo, the 1930’s Italian socialite who invented the Sprizzerol, was looking for a way to package the aperitif to suit the lifestyle of its modern-day consumers, he looked no further than the aluminium can.

The company wanted a convenient, cost-effective packaging that would reflect all that the Sprizzerol brand stands for and that would serve its product in the best possible way.
By teaming up with Rexam, the world’s largest beverage can producer, the makers of Sprizzerol were able to produce a packaging that fitted perfectly with its brand and the ease of consumption for which it was looking.

“Sprizzerol’s glamorous events and sensational performances at shows and fairs are legendary,” said Paolo de Martin of De Martin Sprizzerol GmbH. “Paolo de Martin, who is the owner of De Martin Sprizzerol GmbH, is well known for exceptional and extravagant product presentations. For example it is not unusual for the whole of the Sprizzerol-Bar to be decorated in animal-prints and with glamorous girls wearing feather boas serving the aperitif.”

By working with Rexam, at its factory in Enzesfeld, Austria, the two companies came up with a solution that would not only fit the sophisticated brand but that would provide an easy way to serve, transport and store the drink, as well as being cost-effective.

Paolo de Martin continued: “The know-how of a leading global consumer packaging company enables us to optimize our product and to meet the requirements of our customers. This is an aperitif for all people who enjoy living and also want to show this to others. This drink is the life-style drink for fans of the Italian way of life and who are cool and beautiful. Sprizzerol is synonym for Mediterranean awareness of life, urbanity and eccentricity. Using the 25cl slim aluminium can fits perfectly with this philosophy.”

Harald Moser of Rexam explained further: “As consumers’ lifestyles change, so do their needs and drinks packaging must meet these needs. Consumers are demanding more sophisticated packaging solutions that will give them the drink they want, when they want it and how they want it. On-the-go consumption is increasing and so is occasion drinking such as outdoor events and festivals.

“This is a core market for Sprizzerol and the can fits this profile perfectly. Metal cans are unbreakable, making them suitable where, glass, for example, would pose a safety risk and of course the single serve can makes portion control much easier. With a product like Sprizzerol an aluminium can also allows the product to be served under perfect conditions as it is already mixed in the can and is easy and quick to chill.

“The can is also well suited to premium brands such as Sprizzerol and Rexam often works with customers to create the perfect packaging solution to differentiate a premium brand from the mainstream. By developing the right combination of size, shape and design we can help brands like these create the unique positioning for which they are looking.”

In addition, for events and festivals practical considerations come into effect. Aluminium is light making transport easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly and the shape of the can makes it easy to stack and store. Additionally, cans are 100% recyclable and can be repeatedly recycled with no reduction in the integrity of the metal.

As well as at any self-respecting event, the 25cl single serve can of Sprizzerol is available from retailers in Austria and Germany and in bars and pubs throughout Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Slovenia and Croatia.

Sprizzerol, the Italian drink that says so much about the glamour of those who drink it, is synonymous with the jet-set lifestyle of the rich and famous. One of the advantages of using the suction mechanism is that oil residue does not drip from the nozzle after usage, leaving the packaging clean. Another advantage is that due to the oil being sucked 2mm back from the opening of the nozzle, there is less possibility of contamination polluting the product inside the packaging.

The current neck finish is 24/410 and output is 1CC+/-10%. Thanks to the glossy finish of the screw cap, there are more decoration possibilities for the customer to choose from including silkscreening, hot stamping and lacquering.

1CC OIL PUMP(Patent pending. 200920213472.X)
