RPC Containers and Akzo Nobel have joined forces in the development of a new paint packaging format. Akzo Nobel’s key criteria were to maximise consumer convenience in terms of handling, opening, closing and pouring, and RPC’s Design Office worked closely together with Akzo Nobel to devise a solution that met these requirements.Three RPC Containers sites have provided their expertise to create the stylish custom-moulded square paint pack. The HDPE container, available in 2.5 litre and 5 litre sizes, is manufactured by RPC Raunds, whilst RPC Market Rasen has supplied the PP handle and shroud. In addition, the closure for the 5 litre pack comes from RPC Halstead.
The square design will be launched in the Akzo Nobel’s renowned Do-it-yourself paint ranges in Europe.
The shroud is manufactured with an indented ‘smile’ that facilitates mess-free flow of paint from the container, whilst the opening is designed to enable easy removal and replacement of the cap. In addition, the wide neck allows consumer to insert a four inch brush into the neck of the 5 litre pack for smaller paint jobs.
Further convenience is provided by the integral handle, which can only move 45 degrees. When required, it locks rigidly into the upright position to assist the pouring, but when not in use can be folded for convenient stacking.
“Akzo Nobel provided a challenging brief, and our solution, created by the RPC Design Office with the complementary expertise of RPC Raunds, RPC Market Rasen and RPC Halstead, met their strict parameters,” comments Kathryn Sanderson, Area Sales Manager of RPC Raunds.
“RPC proved a good packaging partner for the square pack concept as they were very willing to work in collaboration with us,” adds Roland Wams, European Marketing Manager Retail at Akzo Nobel. “In terms of design, manufacture and supply, they understood our requirements and strove to meet them.”
He adds that, “the response to the new packaging has been extremely positive from both consumers and retailers.”
