Caps are an eye-catching technical marvel

Caps are an eye-catching technical marvelAdvanced technology and superb creativity have been combined in the unique appearance of the caps for the jars and bottles in the Estée Lauder Cyber White range of skin care products. Manufactured by RPC beauté the closures offer maximum on-shelf impact along with quality and functionality.

The Cyber White caps continue the family image of the Estée Lauder Pure Color make-up range, for which the majority of packs have been developed by RPC beauté, creating a distinctive high quality appearance that reflects and complements the high performance of the products.

The new caps adhere to Estée Lauder’s established brand guidelines. These include a specified colour for the closure – metallic gold; the combination of geometrical shapes in the finished design (a circle within a triangle); and the creation of a multi-layer construction to enclose the core pack – the closure – within a thick transparent layer which acts like a magnifying glass that enhances the appearance of the closure and creates a ‘jewel-like’ effect.

In particular, the cap’s colour has helped to maximise shelf stand out and product differentiation. The ‘signature’ Lauder gold colour has been combined with a blue tint (via the transparent layer) to suggest a ‘pharmaceutical’ link that emphasises the products’ clinical technical development. To maximise the effectiveness of this approach, a more contemporary gold colour was required and RPC beauté developed a special electroplated new shade – ‘Champagne’ gold.

The creation of the closures has also required an equally challenging technical response using a three material construction – incorporating ABS, surlyn and polypropylene - to overmould a plated part. Such a combination not only helps to create the visual effects but also ensures the necessary robustness that enables this quality appearance to be maintained.

RPC beauté’s highly innovative solution utilises a patented technique. The high pressure and temperature required during the overmoulding process would normally damage the plated part if attempted in the traditional manner. To overcome this, RPC beauté has used a specially developed resin compound instead of traditional ABS, this resin being more resistant to heat and pressure.

During the cooling phase, the plated section takes on insulating properties that creates a physical barrier between the Surlyn and the mould core; this makes the cooling process less efficient and the cycle time longer. In order to overcome this, RPC beauté has developed a special process that increases cooling efficiency and reduces cycle time.

Due to the high mass of Surlyn, the cap is still soft when taken out of the moulds; to be able to take these without damaging or deforming the surface, RPC beauté has also developed a unique way of handling the parts.

The result is a higher overall visual quality for the finished closure as there is intimate contact between the plated surface and the Surlyn, which creates first-surface reflection, and better functional quality as there is no risk of mis-orientation, or any movement or separation of the two parts of the cap, even after repeated use.

This new overmoulding procedure for plated parts offers the potential to cost-effectively design and produce very high quality packaging for a variety of cosmetic and beauty applications such as high-end fragrance caps or colour cosmetics items.
