EDV Packaging and H.J. Heinz Company
Australia Limited have revolutionized the shelf stable seafood market. EDV Packaging has developed an innovative high barrier
cup in white PP/EVOH/PP for a launch of 10 sophisticated varieties of value added tuna and salmon for the Heinz Greenseas
brand, in Australia. For many years, the shelf stable seafood market has been linked to can or glass containers. Heinz, a leading brand in the food industry, sought to give a boost to the healthy eating sector with a new pack concept which offers customer convenience, portability and long shelf-life in a single-serve 100g plastic cup, with re-sealable lid and spork.
Launched on the market in January this year this product has been a success in its speed to market, trade response and sales and has exceeded Heinz' initial sales forecasts.
Many believe that while this product follows the trends of eating on-the-go it is set to be a winner due to its convenience and user-friendliness. The meals are wholesome and healthy snacks. There should be no difficulties selecting these products for the family from the supermarket shelves.
EDV Packaging coextrudes and thermoforms the high barrier PP/EVOH/PP white structure in its production plant located in Llinars del Vallès, in Spain. Thanks to the robust EVOH layer, the cup provides maximum guarantee to long preservation of the packed product.
It also ensures ample barrier to moisture and to oxygen to prevent decay and preserve taste up to 18 months after the packaging date, stored at appropriate temperature in optimal conditions. The light and UV rays damage is avoided thanks to the opacity of the base material.
The cup holds a 100g portion of the tuna or salmon snack and it has a reinforced wall feature designed to provide resistance during the retort sterilization process. The quality and the characteristics of the plastic material make the cup 100% recyclable and its low weight and high resistance to breakage make it a safe and efficient package. The cup has been hermetically thermosealed with a printed aluminium foil. A decorated sleeve with tamper evident closure is added. The injected lid includes a spork for consumers to eat the product at any place at any time.
The final presentation is eye-catching from any side of the supermarket shelves and offers an ideal alternative to consumers looking for healthy high-quality products that are environmentally friendly.
