PCR in food packaging to help brand owners meet recycled content goals.

Berry Global underlines its commitment to including recycled content in its packaging with the introduction of food-grade low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) films containing at least 30% (PCR) post-consumer recycled plastic. Through this addition to its already robust films portfolio, Berry offers brands a solution to their sustainability commitments to include PCR in food packaging.

The PCR-LLDPE is being offered in Berry’s flexible film product offerings and is suitable for most food applications, targeting the bakery and frozen food markets. End-use applications for the PCR-LLDPE films are stand-up pouches, premade bags, and roll stock applications for both vertical form, fill, and seal (VFFS) and horizontal form, fill, and seal (HFFS) packaging.

“Brand owners have made ambitious sustainability commitments to increase the inclusion of PCR across their packaging portfolios. We realize part of achieving these sustainability goals is improving the environmental impact of the products we use every day. We’re proud to offer customers a solution with high levels of food-grade PCR and comparable performance to help meet their goals,” said Wesley Porter, Business Development Director for Berry’s packaging films group.

The film contains at least 30% PCR, which has received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) letter of no objection for its food-grade status.

Berry will source the mechanically recycled PCR from multiple vendors, highlighting the company’s redundancies across its resin suppliers. This redundancy helps customers by promoting an uninterrupted supply of in-demand circular materials. Berry will manufacture the new film from many of its existing North American manufacturing locations.

Spotlight: Customer Collaboration is Key to Bringing Circular Solutions to Market Faster

Berry Global partnered with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. to improve the recyclability of food packaging with MXD6, a high-performance barrier solution for extruded articles, such as thermoformed items and extruded plastic tubes and bottles. The MXD6 barrier is recyclable up to 12% and received Critical Guidance recognition from the Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR), validating its compatibility with the Polypropylene (PP) recycling stream. Using MXD6 helps eliminate the performance and compatibility limitations of Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH), including limited recyclability and reprocessing issues that cause degradation and contamination, and offers an alternative during material shortages.
