Spotlight: Powering Facilities with Wind and Solar Helps Us Provide Lower-Carbon Solutions

  • Berry Global
North America, Mexico

Berry Global and ACCIONA Energía are collaborating to power all four of Berry’s facilities in Mexico with wind and solar power. The five-year power purchase agreement procures nearly 100,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of cost-effective, renewable energy annually, and is projected to avoid around 40,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO2e, annually – equivalent to taking over 15,000 cars off the road. In addition to being the lowest-cost option, this joint effort inherently reduces Berry’s operational impacts and our customers’ supply-chain emissions while minimizing the cost and price fluctuation associated with fossil fuels.

This circularity partnership was initiated by Soraya Gonzalez, Director of Global Strategic Sourcing – Indirect Spend at Berry Global, who recognized an opportunity to leverage Latin America’s cost-effective renewable energy supply, and supported by local administrative and commercial groups, helped Berry meet its climate goals and our customers advance their ambitious sustainability goals with lower-carbon packaging solutions.

Personal Passions Driving Positive Change: More Reducing and More Renewable

More Reducing contributes to ending harmful cycles, like global warming, with positive, proactive solutions. While our company is doing an incredible job of taking positive, circular, sustainable steps wherever we can, we must also continue to help shift away from fossil fuels. We continue to stay ahead of our customers’ demands for lower-carbon, climate-friendly packaging solutions by committing to net-zero emissions by 2050 through our partnership with key suppliers in cleaner energy sources like wind and solar.”
— Soraya Gonzalez, Director, Global Strategic Sourcing – Indirect Spend, Berry Global

“I want to work with companies that support More Renewable solutions, as together we can work towards a positive planet where green energy is the norm, not the exemption.”
—Emma Reiners, Global Head of Communications, ACCIONA Energía

Berry Global partnered with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. to improve the recyclability of food packaging with MXD6, a high-performance barrier solution for extruded articles, such as thermoformed items and extruded plastic tubes and bottles. The MXD6 barrier is recyclable up to 12% and received Critical Guidance recognition from the Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR), validating its compatibility with the Polypropylene (PP) recycling stream. Using MXD6 helps eliminate the performance and compatibility limitations of Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH), including limited recyclability and reprocessing issues that cause degradation and contamination, and offers an alternative during material shortages.
