Welcome to our fifth issue of Food by Webpackaging, the interactive digital publication for the food and beverage packaging industry.

We have a virtual banquet of food packaging content ready for you to devour. All the latest trends are represented as well as some glimpses into the future of where food packaging is headed.

Smaller companies continue to grow into mid-size firms and those mid-size firms seem to be heading toward mergers or purchases. Large operations are becoming more and more prevalent as they seem to be the only ones that can keep up with all of the regulations, rules, laws, and guidelines required by the various organisms relevent to geographic areas. In 2018, there will be slightly more total food packaging SMEs as the industry grows but not as many as there probably should as dozens will fuse into groups, join conglomerates, or be bought outright by international players.

The big news at Webpackaging this year has been the leap forward in 3D and AR technologies, where companies can cut down the initial phase of packaging projects and engage in what we've come to term "rapid pre-protoyping". Now, brands simply have to take a look at a full 3D model of the sort of product they want, change the decoration options, see what it looks like on a shelf or counter, and make a request for quote, cutting down the project's "foreplay" phase by weeks. SDozens of firms have expressed interest in the technology in order to provide sales people, designers, and engineers with a simple way to ensure communication with clients and among team members is easier, faster, and more efficient.
