A packaging type for care products is setting new standards in terms of sustainability. Its manufacture requires approximately 50 per cent less material than a comparable standard packaging type. In addition, it can be rolled up much like a tube, allowing it to be completely emptied. What’s more, the packaging material is entirely recyclable.
A new HDPE bottle developed in cooperation with Beiersdorf for its NIVEA brand is good for the environment in a number of ways. The innovative bottle with cap developed for a body lotion series requires around half the packaging material usually needed. This therefore reduces the cost of materials as well as the associated carbon emissions. Its thin-walled structure makes it lighter and means it is easier to squeeze, while nevertheless remaining stable and impact-resistant enough for transportation, for example. It also continues to protect the formula from external influences such as UV rays.
Optimised discharging of contents
Another advantage of the revolutionary bottle is demonstrated towards the end of its use by the consumer. When its contents begin to run out, it can be rolled up much like a tube of toothpaste, allowing it to be completely emptied. There is a groove on the base of the bottle along which it can be squeezed together to completely flatten the body of the bottle. It can then be easily rolled up and completely emptied, resulting in less waste.
Design for recycling
In developing this packaging solution, attention was paid in particular to high-quality recycling in accordance with the bottle-to-bottle principle. This involves new bottles being produced using recycled bottle material to create a closed loop. To make this possible, both the bottle body made of HDPE and the cap made of PP (not produced by ALPLA) are fully recyclable and can be easily separated in the relevant sorting steps and then efficiently recycled. The label is made of the same material as the bottle.

New Alpla study quantifies environmental impacts of packaging
c7-consult tested the environmental impacts of the packaging of various products typical to the Austrian market ranging from beverages to detergents, considering everything from the contribution they make to climate change to their water consumption. The assessments were commissioned by ALPLA. The study attests to the positive contribution that recycling makes to environmental footprints.
Alpla and BillerudKorsnäs to join forces to pioneer paper bottles for a sustainable future
Plastic packaging solutions provider ALPLA and paper packaging materials and solutions provider BillerudKorsnäs have announced that they will embark on a joint venture in the Danish paper bottle company ecoXpac. When the transaction has been completed, ALPLA and BillerudKorsnäs will own equal parts of ecoXpac.
ALPLA and FROMM found joint venture, PET Recycling Team Wolfen GmbH
ALPLA and FROMM are founding a joint venture, PET Recycling Team Wolfen GmbH, the aim of which is to recycle the PET bottles in the recyclables collected from households in Germany. The collaboration partners are investing €7 million in sorting and processing systems at the Texplast facility in Wolfen.

ALPLA produces bottles using recycled HDPE material for Henkel
For many years, recycling has been a key issue for ALPLA, the world’s leading specialist in plastic packaging. The Austrian company cooperated with Henkel over the course of two years on the production of detergent bottles with 15 per cent recycled HDPE.
