Ball and Allies Launch Carbon-Free Aerosol Can

  • Ball Corporation

Ball Corporation, in partnership with Alcoa and Unilever, has unveiled the first consumer personal and home care (PHC) packaging made with aluminium produced using ELYSIS® carbon-free smelting technology. The aerosol can – made with 50% ELYSIS aluminium and 50% post-consumer recycled content – marks a major step forward in sustainable packaging and industrial collaboration.

“This project combines higher recycled content and low-carbon primary aluminium – both key to decarbonize aluminium packaging and the aluminium sector at large. This is both a packaging innovation and critical supply chain collaboration at work,” said Ramon Arratia, chief sustainability officer and vice president of global public affairs at Ball Corporation.

“Through this collaboration with Ball and Unilever, we’re helping bring low-carbon aluminium into everyday products and demonstrating how innovation at the material level can deliver tangible sustainability benefits. We are proud to collaborate across the aluminium value chain to reduce carbon footprints and create real impact in people’s daily lives,” said Renato Bacchi, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Alcoa.

As a founding member of the Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI), Ball continues to lead in responsible sourcing. In 2024, 27% of aluminium purchased by Ball was ASI-certified – up from 21% in 2023 – and 80% came from fully ASI-certified rolling mills. Over 90% of Ball’s global plants are ASI-certified, reflecting its commitment to transparency and continuous improvement.

Ball’s Climate Transition Plan, updated in 2025, outlines a science-based roadmap to net zero. The company is targeting a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across all scopes by 2030, aligned with the 1.5°C pathway. The plan prioritizes real reductions across the value chain, supports customers’ climate goals, and avoids reliance on offsets.

The launch of ELYSIS aluminium in PHC packaging is more than a technical achievement - it’s a model for how collaboration can turn climate ambition into market-ready solutions.
