BillerudKorsnäs strengthens competence in formable packaging

BillerudKorsnäs has strengthened its competence in formable packaging through a smaller investment in a 10 percent stake in the Danish packaging innovation company EcoXpac. The investment forms the foundation for collaboration and is part of BillerudKorsnäs commitment to innovation to solve the packaging challenges of the future.

BillerudKorsnäs has in addition to a solid foundation in innovation, including the continuous development of our existing materials and solutions, also an ambition to take on a number of larger, more fundamental and long-term challenges in the packaging sector. This is done in order to find solutions and develop entirely new packaging concepts that can challenge plastic, glass and aluminium. One such concept is to produce a bottle completely made of paper. Through collaboration and by combining the knowledge and experience of BillerudKorsnäs and EcoXpac the aim is to achieve this.

"Innovation is a key factor in further strengthening our business in the long term but also a way for us to challenge conventional packaging for a sustainable future. Therefore it is natural for us to aim high in a number of well-chosen development projects and take on real challenges that can have a big and long term positive impact on our business and our contribution to a more sustainable world.

Although the investment in EcoXpac is small in financial terms compared to the size of BillerudKorsnäs, it creates conditions for success for the innovation challenges we now take on." - says Magnus Wikström SVP Technology & Strategic Development at BillerudKorsnäs.

EcoXpac is a company specialising in advanced 3D-forming of fibre based structures. It was founded in 2005 and is based in Denmark.

"Our knowledge and experience in the area of moulded pulp and our entrepreneurial approach combined with the ability of BillerudKorsnäs to bring ideas and innovations to the market forms a strong base for our future cooperation. A base from which we aim to realize projects such as that to create a paper bottle"- says Jesper Servé the founder of EcoXpac.

BillerudKorsnäs is simplifying its name to Billerud to cater to its international customers. As a leading supplier of virgin fiber-based paper and packaging materials, the name change is fully in line with the company’s strategy to expand into North America and continue driving sustainable growth in global markets.

Unique home-compostable paper laminate for flexible packaging

BASF and the Swedish packaging material manufacturer BillerudKorsnäs have developed a unique home-compostable paper laminate for flexible packaging. It can be used to produce wraps with individually adjusted barrier properties. And it is a solution that meets today’s requirement for sustainability by being organically recyclable.

BillerudKorsnäs and The Paper Straw Co to launch the first U-Bend paper straw

Together with the Paper Straw Co, BillerudKorsnäs has developed the first functional 180° U-Bend straw, made out of paper. The straw is made to be used for individual drink cartons such as juice, milk and water. The straw based on materials from sustainably sourced forests is also biodegradable, resulting in a positive impact on pollution and littering compared to plastic straws.

BillerudKorsnäs partner CHOCAL received innovation prize at ProSweets Cologne for challenging traditional chocolate packaging made out of aluminum. FibreForm is the challenger and there is great potential for replacing further products.

BillerudKorsnäs and ALPLA to join forces to pioneer paper bottles for a sustainable future

BillerudKorsnäs and ALPLA have announced that they will form a joint venture in the Danish paper bottle company ecoXpac. The two companies intend to leverage the development by combining their resources, competencies and strengths to support scaling ecoXpac in the commercialisation of a fully biobased and recyclable paper bottle.

BillerudKorsnäs has entered into a binding agreement with all shareholders of Bergvik Skog AB concerning a split of Bergvik Skog AB’s forest assets, including BillerudKorsnäs’ acquisition of Bergvik Skog Öst AB. The acquisition contributes to securing BillerudKorsnäs’ future wood supply through direct deliveries and more efficient logistics flows and by making the company a strong player on the Swedish wood market.

New Billerud Flute is used as middle layer in corrugated board packaging for demanding transport and climate conditions. The material's already superior strength has now been increased by up to 8 percent, meaning that customers can produce boxes of the same strength while using less material.

BillerudKorsnäs launches improved coated liner products

BillerudKorsnäs recently upgraded its BillerudKorsnäs Design, Decor and Supreme coated liner products, resulting in better fibre formation, smoother surfaces and a better printing result for the liner, as well as increased strength and stiffness. Customers that have evaluated the new grades have all reported positive results.
