We produced 100 boxes using a combination of digital and flexo printing for a commission from Allen Jones to provide packaging for his Red Lamp design - part of a retrospective celebration of his work at the Royal Academy. Red Lamp is a working table lamp. The lamp base features Allen Jones’ famous “eye” and the lamp shade has a 1987 painting reproduced on it. It sold out in days after its launch at the exhibition.
We were asked to complete the work by James Gilpin from the Commissioned by you agency after meeting at the Packaging Innovations show last autumn. Each lamp came with a numbered limited edition certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Pop art pioneer Allen Jones is critically acclaimed as an artist who can inspire controversy and his work embraces popular culture, influencing everything from design to film and fashion.
Connect Packaging Sales Director James Newton said: “The appearance of the packaging for this one-off commission had to be just right to ensure it underlined the calibre and importance of the work contained. We combined both flexo and digital printing methods to achieve the high quality and detailed registration required and while the media used was a standard 200 Kraft Test double wall board grade, the end result was an ‘extraordinary’ box. It was fantastic for us to be commissioned to be involved in such an interesting and different project - and to be invited to do so off the back of attending Packaging Innovations was wonderful.”
