Frugalpac is proud to announce that ROSSMANN, one of Germany’s largest retailers, has become the first in the country to launch a wine in the Frugal Bottle – the world’s first commercially available paper wine and spirits bottle, made from 94% recycled cardboard.

The launch sees a German Pinot Blanc, produced with the Fair & Green certified Achkarren Wine Cooperative, now available in over 2,200 ROSSMANN stores nationwide. This represents a landmark moment for sustainable packaging in the German wine trade.

    Why the Frugal Bottle?

    • 84% lower carbon footprint than a glass bottle.
    • Five times lighter than a glass bottle.
    • Shatterproof, easy to recycle through existing household waste streams

Solveig Grohne, Wine Category Manager at ROSSMANN, said:

“It certainly takes a bit of courage to bottle high-quality German wine in a new type of packaging like the cardboard bottle. I am proud and happy that we can now offer our customers this innovative and delicious wine throughout Germany.”

Malcolm Waugh, CEO of Frugalpac, added:

“ROSSMANN’s decision to introduce the Frugal Bottle across 2,200 stores is a landmark moment for Germany’s wine industry. With major global retailers including Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Target, Whole Foods Market, and 7-Eleven already embracing the Frugal Bottle, this launch proves that consumers everywhere are ready for sustainable alternatives to glass at scale.

“Today, over 50 brands in more than 25 countries are already using the Frugal Bottle in over 120 wines and spirits – and that number continues to grow.”

    A Global Movement

The Frugal Bottle is already in use across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australasia, helping drinks brands, retailers, and packaging companies decarbonise their supply chains, reduce logistics costs, and meet rising consumer demand for sustainable packaging.

And this is just the start. Frugalpac has developed not only the bottle itself, but also the Frugal Bottle Machine – enabling drinks producers around the world to manufacture bottles locally, cutting down shipping miles and embedding sustainability at source.
