Rohrer implemented an innovative disposable solution for vitality tests in dental practices within the scope of a project carried out in collaboration with a specialized manufacturer in the field of dental technology.
The classic formula is based on a mix of various separate components with the usual uncertainties with regard to quantities, reaction time, application and hygiene conditions. The dental assistant or the dentist manually mixes liquid "A" with powder "B" and applies the mixture to the tooth using a brush "C" to test the tooth's sensitivity.
Rohrer analyzed the functions of the vitality test together with the customer and subsequently reinterpreted the principle of the frangible seal. The principle of the frangible seal is based on a special sealing mechanism that makes it possible to open a channel in the seal's surface by applying a certain amount of pressure and then to mix the liquid with other substances in a controlled manner and with precise metering to produce a defined end product.
The application of this principle in dental technology has now made it possible to implement the entire procedure in a single, three-cavity disposable blister: an outer, rounded cavity contains liquid "A", a cavity at the center contains powder "B"; brush "C" is contained in an elongated cavity at the other end. Slight pressure applied by a finger to the outer cavity transports liquid "A" into the center cavity, where it is mixed with the powder substrate. Pressure applied to the center cavity applies the mixed end product to the sealed brush.
The dentist extracts the brush from the blister packaging by pulling on a lug and has a hygienically sound disposable solution in his hand. The application is ready for use in a matter of seconds with no assistance required from a third party. In addition, patients can rest assured that the product being used to treat them is freshly prepared as opposed to a solution in opened bottles that may have been in storage for some time. The packaging solution therefore contributes towards productivity in the practice and helps towards patient satisfaction.
