    FMP News

The desire to improve our general health and wellness shows no signs of stopping. Employing the latest exercise trends like interval training to get the perfect body, and eating not only the right foods but those with additional health benefits such as nutraceuticals and super foods, is deemed fashionable as well as sensible. The focus is on maximising the body’s full potential, and now, many are opting for cosmeceuticals over traditional cosmetics for this reason.

    What is the difference?

Cosmetics only affect the top layer of the skin’s epidermis, and are typically used to improve or enhance appearances. Examples of cosmetics are make-up, shampoo and face creams. However, cosmeceuticals also include a range of medical and pharmaceutical benefits, their biologically active ingredients penetrating deeper layers of the epidermis to achieve the desired results. For instance, lipsticks containing antioxidants, and some anti-ageing creams, are considered to be cosmeceuticals. Many prefer to have a skin cream that not only moisturises, but reduces wrinkles or helps to combat acne at the same time.

The importance of clear labelling and packaging

As the cosmeceutical market expands, it is more important than ever for such products to be correctly labelled and packaged so that consumers know exactly what they are getting, and so they can be confident they are purchasing a genuine cosmeceutical. FMP manufacture and package cosmeceuticals, and our services also include sachet packaging, healthcare contract manufacture and cleanroom environment packing solutions. As leaders in our field, we know exactly what cosmeceutical packaging should contain.

The popularity of sachet packaging to consumers, due to its cleanliness, convenience and ability to keep contents fresh, has been mirrored in the pharmaceuticals industry.

Maybe this is due to the demand for different varieties in a small time frame, which sachet packaging providers can offer even on a single packaging line, thanks to easily integrated pouch systems. They offer a basic but efficient solution for packaging, as they make it easy to cater for a varied product range.

There is powerful machinery now capable of filling up to around 1000 packages per minute, so the problem of slow productivity is not an issue any longer. In the FMCG market, sachets are sometimes seen as a way to increase profit margins, due to the lower volumes needed to fill each package. In the medical world, this is not as much of a concern, but both sectors benefit from the speedy output now generated by the latest sachet packaging machines.

New modular systems have also allowed for improved accuracy as far as dosing is concerned, a crucial element in pharmaceuticals. For medicine which is often taken on the go, the sachet provides a fuss free alternative to bottles and boxes.

Industry experts forsee that as much as 50% of flexible packaging for pharmaceuticals will come in the form of a sachet or stick pack.

Rather than convenience of profit margin, the reason for this is probably purely health related. Sachets protect medicine from air and light, keeping the contents fresher for longer.

The success of a pharmaceutical or cosmetic product depends on many things: the correct formulation and design, an effective distribution strategy and, of course, great marketing of your brand. Have you ever considered though, the importance of the physical properties of your product’s packaging? First impressions can be made in seconds on how a product looks and feels and in pharmaceuticals, that initial perception can be crucial. Get the materials and creation of your packaging right and you can see your product stand out from the competition and bring something unique to the market.

    Carefully consider your materials

Materials for contract packaging or sachet packaging solutions need to be chosen carefully. You will need your packaging to be sustainable, to enable them to be made with as little waste as possible: you may consider a biodegradable sachet or one made from a recyclable material, for instance. Pharmaceutical products require packaging of sufficient strength and flexibility. This is also something you will need to think about as well as how the product will be disposed of.

Medical contract packaging is often created for products that need to be stored in refrigerators: the material will therefore need to perform under different temperatures without buckling or breaking. And if you are creating a liquid product, how will it be dispensed? Does the container need to be pressurised? If so, the material used must be able to withstand these pressures.

    Make your product unique

Once you have found the materials that will best fit your product, your product needs to stand out and this is where how it feels and looks is crucial. FMP offers a full service including product and packing formulation and design right through to creation, filling and testing. We are highly experienced in producing high quality, functional and unique cosmetics and personal care packaging in a compliant clean environment and are confident we can assist you in the creation of your brand.
