Pescanova, a Spanish company specialising in frozen fish products, has placed a repeat order for another KLIKLOK SRWD lock-form cartoning machine. The company, based in Redondela, Galicia, currently sells more than 50,000 tons of fish products globally each year and is ranked among the top five companies in its sector.

Packaging frozen food presents a unique set of challenges – all being addressed through a collaborative approach across the value chain. Packaging machinery manufacturers like Kliklok work closely with their customers to develop solutions that ensure efficiency and speed in packaging, while maintaining durability and flexibility in design.

In order to package its range of fish burgers, medallions and breaded fillets for distribution, Pescanova approached KLIKLOK looking for a solution that would enable the fish producer to package its products in a range of cartons sizes using one machine. KLIKLOK’s SRWD lock-forming machine, designed with the capability to form large carton sizes in either single or double head configuration, had already proved to be a winning choice and was selected again to match both the speed and carton range requirements.

The SRWD lock-forming machine uses individual size-specific forming head assemblies, which are quickly and easily changed between sizes. Eliminating the need to use hot-melt glue during the forming process helps to save both energy and overhead costs. The double-head configuration of the SRWD enables Pescanova to form two cartons in one cycle at speeds of up to 120 cartons per minute.

KLIKLOK cartoning machinery has been synonymous with frozen foods since the company pioneered the first lock-formed carton erector over 50 years ago. With frozen food becoming increasingly popular with European consumers - and a regular fixture in the weekly grocery shop – there are a growing number of options for packaging frozen foods from boxes, cartons, bags, pouches, heat-in-bag pouches, lidded trays and pans and crystalized PET trays.

With the co-operation of their new agent in India, Vedic Systems, KLIKLOK has successfully secured an order for two fully automatic end load cartoning lines for India's biggest spice producer, packing 4 different size bags of aromatic spice mix at an impressive 330 cartons per minute.

To achieve this speed, Kliklok designed a brand new variant of their 6” pitch PRIMA end load cartoner, incorporating servo motors to replace mechanical drive mechanisms throughout the machine. This eliminates time-consuming hand wheel adjustments with quick and easy automatic adjustments. For this particular project, to meet the specific requirements of the customer, each Prima was enhanced with a number of optional features to maintain efficiency and consistently high performance. For example a large 10” interactive colour touch screen, modem capability for remote trouble-shooting, and feedback-style digital read-outs to ensure that any adjustments are correctly confirmed before the machine will start.

Kliklok’s patented rotary carton feeder is unique in its ability to run cartons with large quality variation – essential to maintaining production efficiency on such a high speed line

The deployment of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags ensure that the change parts fitted are precisely matched to the SKU selected on the menu screen before the machine can run. This fail safe system, ensures maximum productivity and eliminates down-time due to operator error . The tags were fitted to the hopper gate, piston inserter pushers, and carton feed arms. The “easy-fit” design of these change parts mean that repeatable size change on the Prima can be completed in less than 10 minutes.

For the product loading operation prior to cartoning, each PRIMA was integrated with Kliklok’s triple module CASCADE LOADING SYSTEM (CLS) accepting three lanes of product arriving directly from the customer’s bag-makers, and providing a continuous flow of bags into the infeed of the PRIMA cartoner, The compact CLS unit is designed with fully adjustable 3-stage vertical rotor timing mechanisms, providing the collation, stacking and transfer of bags or sachets. For this project, the CLS was fitted with multiple sensors, pre-positioned to pick up all four possible bag lengths

Kliklok is delighted to supply these new fully automatic integrated systems, which will provide the customer with two highly efficient state of the art packaging lines, that enable the customer to achieve ambitious growth plans at its two factories in Pune and Mumbai.

Kliklok has won another order to supply two more JR carton forming machines for Heilmann in Germany, to erect tapered trays made from biodegradable & recycled board, packing fruit & vegetables. This brings the total number of Kliklok installations for Heilmann to NINE, a great success for both companies!

With economic and environmental factors continually playing a strong role in the packaging business, with particular emphasis on sustainability, the preference for using recycled carton board trays indicates a noticeable retreat from traditional plastic punnets.

With over 50 years of knowledge & experience in the packaging industry, Kliklok is able to offer a suitable cartoning machine to ease the transition from hand erecting to automatic carton forming - Kliklok’s JR Former has proved to be the perfect solution yet again.

The JR was selected for its long-standing reputation as a versatile and dependable machine, designed to accommodate small to medium sized cartons at up to 60 cartons per minute, providing a steady flow of formed cartons or trays for either hand filling or automatic product loading.
