Packaging Technology

Leading the
way in food
closure systems

Since the three companies merged to create a North American source for all things packaging, Weatherchem, Stull, and Mold-Rite have also taken stock of the international market and have found that that food sector offers one of the world's best arenas to grow and introduce
innovative packaging and closure designs. This is one of the primary motivations behind the group's foray into the space, with two closure systems that are causing a stir among companies seeking genuinely innovative solutions.

Ultra-light fliptops

Stull was first on the block with its Ultra-Light Flip Tops, and item that received a lot of attention due to its simple dispensing paradigm and
incredible in-home durability. The closures are light in weight
and offer companies an excellent new system for
squeezable dispensing. The closures are ideal for
condiments (honey, sauces, mustards, dressings,
mayonnaise) and household products (dish
detergents, car polish, hand soaps) and are lighter
than most counterparts. Products topped with the
Ultra Light cap can result in lighter total truckloads,
cutting down on both shipping costs and the total
CO2 footprint of the product.

Attractive on the shelf, opening the product is easier than ever with the Ultra Light's 180 degree Easy Open recessed area. Consumers can effortlessly flip open the closure from various angles and the one piece closure ensures a cap never rolls off a counter onto a floor.

The interior of the closure
features an interesting addition - that of Stull's special "liquid trap" design. Often, food products will separate when stored and liquid will rise to the top, only to be discovered when consumers turn bottles over and splatter their food with because they forgot to shake. The liquid trap helps ensure this doesn't happen. The specially designed orifice feature extends under deck into good product, and helps keep separated liquid from dripping out when the bottle is squeezed.

Aside from allowing more product and less
liquid to dispense, the orifice is also
optimally positioned on the closure to
maximize control, accurately and evenly
distributing the desired amount of the
product.

MegaFlap

Weatherchem, on the other hand, has focused on the belief that consumers should be able to get to what they need without wasting time, so the company has created the MegaFlap,

one of the largest and most secure flip top closures on the market, perfect for nutritional powders, snacks, pet foods, and more!

The difference between the MegaFlap and its cousins is its size - at 120mm wide, it's one of the largest closures available, with a full open orifice for easy access, and a clean, contemporary look for maximum shelf impact. Further, the closure provides an under-the-lid, scoop retention feature, which means consumers can always have their scoops ready to be used instead of having them burrow down into the product.

Combining the scoop retention feature with easy access to the product inside, not to mention the fact that the closure can be opened one-handed, ensures a much improved consumer experience. Clearly, the MegaFlap provides a better solution for consumers, while also offering valuable product differentiation for brands.

LiquiFlapper

Another thing we've seen is that consumers often become disenchanted when pouring liquids out of seemingly attractive containers, only to realize dispensing is more difficult than they expected, because of glugging, messes, leaks or liquids that just seem to pour too quickly or slowly. To ensure this is addressed, the LiquiFlapper® closure has been released.

Foremost, the LiquiFlapper closure is a one-piece system. It can be flipped open with one hand and snaps closed with an audible snap, assuring the consumer of a tight, leak-resistant seal that locks in freshness and provides security when the container houses harsh or hazardous chemicals. The closure is tough, resistant, and shuts securely, so that household mishaps won't lead to household messes.

The LiquiFlapper also features a handy cut-off spout. Tilting the container back slightly immediately cuts off the flow of product. A simple and elegant solution, this gives the consumer a very high level of control over the flow rate. The closure's butterfly hinge means the lid stays open while pouring, so it doesn’t create a mess by getting in the way of the liquid’s flow, and the tear-drop orifice eliminates glugging by allowing air to pass over the outbound stream of liquid.
