    Determining requirements - developing solutions

The beginning of every development involves specifications in accordance with DIN 69901 / VDI 2519 to determine all the requirements on the component. The most important points to clarify are:

    • Thermal use
    • Mechanical requirements (load cases, vibrations, etc.)
    • Resistance to attacks (e.g. by chemicals)
    • Exposure to radiation (e.g. UV light)
    • Environmental influences (moisture, weather, micro-organisms)
    • Other relevant functional characteristics (appearance, haptics, sliding and friction properties, electrical properties, decoration or finishing, etc.)

From this we develop a solution in the form of a product specification. We take into account the principles of plastic component design, such as damage-free demoulding, high process reliability and consistent mould filling. Ultimately, a drawing and the specification are available.

The process stages follow VDI Directive 2221: Planning (clarify the task) - Drafting (develop the concept) - Design (design definition) - Finalisation (developing the documentation).

    Rapid prototyping and rapid tooling

To gain a better idea of the component, prototypes can be manufactured in different generative procedures (rapid prototyping). In the same way, near-series injection moulded parts can be manufactured in a pilot lot with the help of cost-effective aluminium tools (rapid tooling).

    Blow moulding&nbsp

We work with extrusion blow moulding (mainly PE-HD and PP) and stretch blow moulding (PET) procedures. There are 7 systems available. Typical products are all kinds of round and square bottles.

    Injection moulding

We process a wide assortment of thermoplastics using 30 injection moulding machines with a locking force of up to 1600kN (160 tonnes). The injection moulding is carried out at the locations in Ostermundigen, Switzerland, and Chropyne, Czech Republic.

Typical products are fasteners, packaging, all kind of technical components and disposable laboratory supplies.

There is an ISO 7 class clean room available in Ostermundigen, Switzerland. The plant in Ostermundigen is certified according to the ISO 13485 and BRC/IoP standards; the plant in Chropyne, Czech Republic, is certified according to the BRC/IoP standard.

    Development and construction

Many decades of experience combined with modern development tools such as Moldflow and 3D CAD systems allow us to develop and construct in a way which is suitable for plastics. It is important to include the plastics technology in a project as early on as possible. Only by doing so can parts be created which can be filled properly and removed from their moulds without being damaged. It is often possible to reduce the number of components in a system though function integration or to replace metal parts with plastic parts. An intelligent design of the parting lines minimises the number of slides and increases the security and efficiency of the process.

We also work with bioplastics and already have over 5 years of experience in this area.

    Joining, processing, forming

The starting materials in this area are semi-finished plastic products (boards, piping, profiles). These semi-finished products are processed using machines (sawing, milling, drilling, with CNC machine). This produces technical components in small series. Systems and equipment can be built using various joining technologies such as hot gas welding and extrusion welding but also gluing and mechanical joining. There is also a thermoforming machine available so that basins and containers can also be created.

The department for joining, processing and forming is located in Ostermundigen, Switzerland.
