PET, the plastic twin of glass

  • SR Packaging

PET is a phenomenal material. It's eminently recyclable. It offers a number of barrier properties not found in other plastics. It can be molded fairly easily. Its clarity is unparalleled. The problem is, when creating containers out of PET, companies tend to approach the material as they would others, using the same proportions, sizing, and thicknesses that they would with other products. A standard PET product, however, isn't going to cut it in the luxury space, where consumers are accustomed to a higher level of quality.

SR Packaging has a slightly different approach. For companies seeking to launch a new luxury brand or update an existing one, SR offers a series of heavy, thick-walled PET containers that are as analogous to glass as the material can be. When a consumer picks up a glass perfume or cream bottle, it has a heft to it and though the tactile sensation of PET and its level of clarity are similar to glass, the only difference is the standard weight.

The heavy, thick-walled bottles produced by SR weigh approximately 54 grams, compared to a comparably sized glass bottle which comes in at about 56 grams. The weight is, therefore, similar and provides the expected heft and feel a luxury shopper would require in a product that costs more than other brands. Yet, each PET container offers the benefits of the material as well as offering one that glass does not: it's very difficult to break.

This is one of the key differentiators of PET, and why it is better suited as a material to be used when travelling, even if it's just out for a night on the town or between home and the gym. Glass may still be the king of household perfume bottles and cream containers, but PET is rapidly gaining ground and simply outclasses glass in the "on-the-go" category.

The bottles boast an average wall thickness of 4mm, nearly duplicating what one would expect from a PET bottle. They can be done in any number of colours and when combined with SR Packaging's wide array of decoration options, the bottles emerge ready to be delivered, glass-like and appropriate for the luxury market. SR also offers a line of matching thick-walled jars, providing companies viable receptacles for gels, creams, and other products so they can create a full cosmetic, personal care, or cosmeceutical line.

By making sure that PET has the weight luxury products require, SR Packaging has begun to blaze new market trails for the material!
