A trigger spray head developed by Berry Global for its customer Werner & Mertz to deliver enhanced sustainability benefits has been recognised in the recently announced German Packaging Awards 2022.

The Berry 3R circular trigger sprayer was honoured in the Sustainability category for its mono-material approach in the design of a spray head that is made from over 97% polypropylene (PP). Typically, the challenge of creating an effective head involves the precise coordination of many individual and complex parts, each made from different materials.

Equally significant, the parts for the 3R are manufactured incorporating 29 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, while the entire head is 18 percent lighter on average than the current market standard.

At the same time, Berry’s designers have ensured that this more sustainable design does not comprise the spray head’s high levels of performance for consumers. It combines comfortable handling and ease of use to provide controlled and accurate spraying through latest pre-compression technology.

Enhanced circularity

To further enhance the circularity of the entire pack, the spray head is screwable for easy removal to allow the bottle to be refilled and the trigger reused several times.

“The 3R circular trigger sprayer demonstrates our commitment to work with our customers to help them meet and exceed their sustainability goals,” commented Vincent Clauzel, EVP & GM Berry Global CPI Bramlage.

“We are extremely proud to receive this award, which is the result of the great teamwork from all our colleagues and reflects the depth of design and technical expertise within our business.”

The Berry 3R circular trigger sprayer is being used by Werner & Mertz across its range of household cleaners.

"The goal of our joint project was to consistently and uncompromisingly implement all the elements of a powerful and at the same time recyclable spray and foam pump for cleaning agents. And we did it perfectly!” said Immo Sander, Head of Packaging Development at Werner & Mertz.

The German Packaging Awards are organised by the German Packaging Institute (dvi) to celebrate the best solutions in packaging and were presented at the FACHPACK exhibition in Nuremberg.

“If you want to see outstanding creative and intelligent packaging innovations, look no further than the winners of the German Packaging Award,” said Dr Bettina Horenburg, Director Corporate Communications at Siegwerk Druckfarben and dvi board member.

“It is extremely remarkable that the companies in our industry have not allowed the adversities caused by Covid-19, the energy crisis, and supply chain problems to get in the way of their innovation and creative power.”

Spotlight: Customer Collaboration is Key to Bringing Circular Solutions to Market Faster

Berry Global partnered with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. to improve the recyclability of food packaging with MXD6, a high-performance barrier solution for extruded articles, such as thermoformed items and extruded plastic tubes and bottles. The MXD6 barrier is recyclable up to 12% and received Critical Guidance recognition from the Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR), validating its compatibility with the Polypropylene (PP) recycling stream. Using MXD6 helps eliminate the performance and compatibility limitations of Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol (EVOH), including limited recyclability and reprocessing issues that cause degradation and contamination, and offers an alternative during material shortages.
