AS anyone in the food industry knows The Food Information Regulations (FIR) 2013 , the UK implementation of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers (‘FIC’) come into force before the end of 2014

    The rules include:

    - mandatory nutrition labelling on pre-packaged food
    - more country of origin labelling
    - improved date marking (including date of first freezing)
    - clarity and legibility of food information
    - labelling of non pre-packed foods
    - allergen information, including on food sold loose and in restaurants, cafes etc

Under the new rules, all ingredients must be in one location and allergens will be emphasised on the label. Food businesses can choose what method they want to use to emphasise these, for example, by listing them in bold. Full regulations can be found here LINK

What this clearly means is that most food packaging will need to be re-designed and this may mean hundreds or thousands of artwork changes for some companies; the people responsible for package design and QC are going to be very busy!

But help is at hand! Our Proofiler Content and Content Compare will dramatically reduce the time taken to check the changed artwork. Two files can be compared in the background and the results send back to the graphic designer or QC person. Minimum font size is checked, ingredients and allergens can be checked against a Word or Excel table, and crucially we check that nothing else has been unintentionally changed whilst modifying the artwork to comply with the regulations.

    - The EyeC Proofiler Content is a complete PDF proofing system for monitoring artwork changes during the design, revision, approval, and prepress processes
    - 100% content verification for your artwork: the EyeC Proofiler Content is the first technology that allows companies to inspect live and outlined text, graphics, layout, barcodes, and Braille in a single operation.

Dirk Lütjens, one of the founders of EyeC and Head of Development of the EyeC Proofiler Content, comments: “Artwork approval is a critical phase in the design and printing process. An error at this stage can be extremely costly for a company in terms of time, money, and image. Presently, most companies rely on manual proofreading to check and approve artwork files. This process is tedious, time-consuming, and not 100% reliable. The need for a solution that increases the security of the process, reduces the number ofdesign cycles, and decreases the time it takes to get to the market is huge. With the EyeC Proofiler Content, we are now able to address those issues.”

Based on a new technology, the EyeC Proofiler Content is the first PDF proofing system in the market that inspects the entire content of an artwork in a single operation: live and outlined text, graphics, layout, barcodes and Braille. The inspection is simple, fast, and reproducible. Significant deviations between the two inspected files are displayed for the operator to evaluate and then listed in a report that is generated automatically.

Dirk Lütjens explains: “The EyeC Proofiler Content is an extremely easy-to-use and accurate artwork inspection system. Its strength lies in its unique ability to verify, at the same time the text, graphics, and layout of two PDF files. On the one hand, it increases the accuracy of the inspection by enabling the EyeC Proofiler Content to identify changes that other technologies cannot detect; for instance, hidden text or graphics. On the other hand, it allows the EyeC Proofiler Content to analyse complex changes between two PDFs and shows the user exactly the origin of those differences.”
