In this ongoing series of case study articles, Weatherchem explores some of the applications developed for its various closures.  This installment features Florida Crystals sugars and sweeteners and the various benefits Weatherchem was able to provide.

Customer: Florida Crystals
End user: Florida Crystals
Product: Organic sugar
Market: Food (sugars/sweeteners)

Florida Crystals' response to customer requests for and easier-to-use product led them directly to the Flapper® closure.  The Flapper provided the company with a convenient dispensing solution and the ability to ensure high quality and freshness for its organic and natural sugar products.

According to Kevin Dick, Plant Manager, "We order and store just one closure for both our 16 oz. canister and our 48 oz. jug, which really simplifies the manufacturing process.  Florida Crystals has relied on Weatherchem as its sole-source supplier of flip top closures since 1998.  Consistent, on-time delivery and timely responses to our needs have led to a relationship that is highly valued by both companies."

 Market factors:

The confectionary and sweetener market offers some interesting contrasts. The market runs the gamut from artificial sweeteners used as an integral part of weight control, to the sugars most of us use daily, to the colorful sprinkles and chocolate shavings used to top delicious desserts. At the same time, this market has one continuous need – colorful and convenient packaging that differentiates a brand. Combined with Florida Crystals' other value propositions (USDA Organic product, small scale product from the "home" community, certified carbon free, and excellent level of quality), the closure provides the perfect complement to the product.

Results of the implementation:

  • Higher level of shelf appeal – customers prefer firm, recyclable containers to bags or boxes.
  • More favorable response from consumers after purchase, thanks to the controlled dispensing.
  • Higher level of consumer satisfaction – the closure and container keep the product fresher.
