The packaging for Prestone® Products Corporation’s new advanced, patent-pending Triple Seal Protection™ Stop Leak family of products has won a silver award at the 2016 DuPont Innovative Packaging Awards.

The DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation is the industry’s longest running, global, independently-judged celebration of innovation and collaboration throughout the value chain and is recognized globally as the leading packaging awards program. The international competition honors innovations in packaging design, materials, technology and processes. An independent panel of packaging experts evaluated nearly 200 entries from more than 25 countries.

“Noticeable this year was a strong commitment to the greater good, with a focus shift from just package functionality to more solutions-based packaging, which provides consumers greater access to products that make their life better,” said Lead Judge David Luttenberger, CPP, global packaging director of Mintel Group Ltd.

Packaging the Prestone Stop-Leak product line

Prestone partnered with TricorBraun to develop a functional, transparent, three- compartment intuitive package design to effectively deliver the value and ease-of-use of this complex product and to simplify the consumer experience. This design allows the consumer to clearly see all of the elements of the product and engage with the product in a way that provides a more positive user experience.

In spite of the fact that the Triple Seal Protection’s three ingredients must be stored separately, Prestone wanted them packaged as one convenient, transparent unit to enhance the consumer’s engagement with the new product. “We knew from the beginning how we wanted the packaging to look and work,” says Thomas Kalagher, Marketing Product Manager, Prestone Performance Chemicals; “but we needed TricorBraun’s design expertise to help us make the package manufacturable.”

The final package consists of four components: a 16 oz. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) primary bottle, a 3 oz. fitment bottle made of injection molded clarified PP (polyethylene), a 3 oz. clarified PP canister with a 51 mm custom squeeze and turn closure, and a PP lid that snaps on top of the primary bottle. All of the bottle’s elements were molded using molds designed by TricorBraun and built by its manufacturing “The Prestone Stop Leak product line is an outstanding accomplishment in packaging innovation because Prestone took a complicated system and made it user- friendly,” commented award judge Brian Rivers, Engineering Fellow, Strategic Sourcing, Sealed Air Corporation, USA.
