Singulus Technologies has been putting its titanium coatings to the ultimate recycling test, following the APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) protocols to verify their metallic color palette is 100% sustainable and eco-friendly. The APR carefully evaluates the components of any product through two basic procedures to prove the materials can be stored at recycle facilities:

  1. Metal detection
  2. Resin type detection

In short, the APR aims is to prove these metal coated plastic bottles have such a low metallic content they can be correctly sorted in a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and be catalogued as a recyclable PET product. After the first test, the company passed the metal detection process on the full range of colors and coating thicknesses submitted for testing.

Though the resin type detection test has yet to be fulfilled due to glare and reflection issues associated with the InfraRed detection equipment, Singulus is currently planning a second round of testing with the necessary adjustments to “tune in” the reflectivity and reduce the gloss level slightly.

Passing this metal test is a significant step forward to be fully approved for recyclability in the United States.
