TricorBraun was recently featured in Packaging Technology Today, exploring how brands are transitioning from multi-material to mono-material packaging to improve recyclability and align with evolving sustainability expectations.

As consumer demand and regulatory pressure continue to rise, packaging is being evaluated not only for performance but also for end-of-life impact. Advances in resin technology and manufacturing are expanding the capabilities of mono-material formats, making them a more viable option across rigid and flexible applications.

Joseph Harper, Director of Supply Chain, and Rosalynd Resendiz, Vice President of Supply Chain at TricorBraun, highlight how materials such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyethylene (PE) are driving adoption, while aluminum and glass remain important mono-material solutions due to their strong barrier properties and recyclability.

The article outlines five key trends accelerating the shift, including growing consumer preference for environmentally responsible brands, the need for simpler recycling experiences, improved compatibility with materials recovery facilities, and advancements in design and engineering that reduce traditional performance tradeoffs.

Harper and Resendiz also note that while mono-material packaging is gaining momentum, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Protecting product integrity, maintaining performance across the supply chain, and addressing technical limitations remain critical considerations for brands evaluating a transition.

Looking ahead, regulatory requirements and continued innovation are expected to make mono-material packaging a core component of sustainable packaging strategies. Brands that collaborate with experienced packaging partners will be better positioned to navigate these changes and bring scalable, compliant solutions to market.
