A packaging solution from Berry is helping Swiss manufacturer Schweizer Salinen meet its sustainability objectives.

The company’s Taufix® de-icing salt is now being packed in Berry's reusable SuperCube® pail incorporating 30% PCR (post-consumer recycled) content. This is in line with Schweizer Salinen’s business strategy, as Oliver Berger, Business Developer Taufix, explains:

“Pursuing a more sustainable way of doing business is an important aspect of our strategy. Our packaging choice is an inherent part of it, and we were intrigued by the idea of a container made with PCR material. It is spot on: we use less virgin plastic and the container’s sturdy quality meets our expectations.”

Another benefit for Schweizer Salinen is the space efficiency of the SuperCube® containers, which stack very well, both filled and empty, while the rectangular shape enables best possible use of pallet, storage and truck space. When each truck is optimally loaded, it allows for reduced truck kilometres.

The SuperCube® pail is perfectly airtight and all weather resistant, which means it easily withstands any condition outdoors, where retailers typically place the de-icing salt for sale. As well as ensuring that the salt inside stays dry, the SuperCube® container is very well suited for transportation at low winter temperatures to remote alpine regions.

Each SuperCube® contains 12.5 kg of product, which provides enough for several weeks without being too heavy to be carried around. The pail’s artwork highlights that it is made with recycled material, a fact which Oliver Berger thinks is important for customer relations.

Although the incorporation of PCR means that the container is grey inside rather than white, Schweizer Salinen is perfectly happy with the new packaging solution:

“We briefly asked ourselves what was more important to us, a white colour for the inside of the container or a contribution to a better environment by using less virgin plastic material. It was not hard to come up with the right answer,” says Oliver Berger. “We are pleased with the SuperCube® container, and we hear that the same applies to end-users.”

Uwe Zinnert, Business Development Manager of Berry Superfos says the SuperCube® is an excellent example of how the best packaging can meet a variety of key objectives, while still delivering important sustainability benefits.

“The lightweight and robust design of our container means it is the perfect solution for this type of application and, importantly, the incorporation of PCR does not impact on its overall performance in any way,” he explains. “It ideally demonstrates how we can support our customers in meeting their sustainability goals while delivering packaging solutions that are fit for purpose.”
