    Australia & NZ packaging innovations recognised in 2019 WorldStar Packaging Awards

    Three Australian companies and one New Zealand company have achieved international recognition for their innovative and unique packaging designs in the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards for 2019. The winning companies include Caps and Closures for Precise Pour, ILNAM Estate for 8 Kangaroos, Lactote for POLATOTE and Radix Nutrition for their Foil Packaging Breakfast Pouch and were across three categories, Beverage, Food and Domestic & Household.

    Winners announced for 2019 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards

    The winners of the 2019 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) for Australia and New Zealand were announced at a gala dinner on the 30th of April at the SOFITEL Wentworth, Sydney. The PIDA Awards are the exclusive feeder program for the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards run by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) with the 2019 PIDA winners automatically eligible for entry into the 2020 international competition.

    AIP announces finalists for 2019 AOONA scholarship

    The Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), are pleased to announce that there are three finalists for the tenth annual Scholarship program which will enable one lucky packaging technologist, designer or engineer in Australia the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Packaging Technology to the value of $9,000. The Diploma in Packaging Technology is a Level 5 qualification which is internationally recognised.

    One of the core objectives of the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is to ensure that individuals are recognised for their significant contributions to the packaging industry. Dr Carol Kilcullen-Lawrence PhD, FAIP, CPP, National President of the AIP had the opportunity at the gala awards night on the 2 May to present five AIP Special Awards. The AIP Special Awards are not given often and are designed to recognise inspirational individuals who have contributed significantly to the packaging industry over many years.

    Packaging New Zealand are pleased to announce that entries are now open for their annual Scholarship program for 2019. The annual Packaging Scholarship enables one lucky packaging technologist, designer or engineer in New Zealand the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Packaging Technology to the value of $9,000. The Diploma of Packaging Technology is offered through the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP); the peak professional body for packaging education and training in Australasia.

    With 2018 nearing an end, it is time to reflect on what was one of the most successful and action-packed years the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) has ever had in its 55-year history. We started the year by hosting the 2018 AIP National Conference, 2018 Packaging Innovation & Design Awards, 2018 WorldStar Packaging Awards, the 100th World Packaging Organisation Board Meeting and the inaugural Women in Industry Forum and we just kept going for the rest of the year. We have tried to highlight some of the key events and initiatives that the AIP undertook this year in this our final newsletter for 2018.

    AIP members participate in APCO's Sustainable Packaging Guidelines Consultation

    AIP Members and industry colleagues are invited to participate in APCO's Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs) Consultation. APCO facilitated a workshop on 29th August 2018 in Sydney to collect views on the sustainable packaging principles and inform the development of the new draft SPGs. APCO is now opening the draft SPGs for industry consultation to ensure the new proposed format and attached resources meet your needs and expectations.

    AIP contributes to 101st World Packaging Organisation (WPO) Board meeting

    Nerida Kelton recently attended the 101st World Packaging Organisation (WPO) Board Meetings which were hosted by China National Export Commodities Packaging Research Institute (CEPI) in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong, China. Shandong, with a history of more than 5,000 years, is considered one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilisation including Confucius and is often called the ‘Spring City’ for its famous 72 artesian springs.

    A small group of Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) members recently attended a site tour at CHEP’s Service Centre in Erskine Park, Sydney. Lachlan Feggans, Senior Manager of Sustainability for CHEP, and Mathew Karbowiak, Service Centre Manager, provided the group with the opportunity to learn more about CHEP’s pallet reconditioning operations, the role of CHEP’s National Logistics Control Centre, and the value CHEP provides through the circular supply chain.

    For the third consecutive year the WPO, supported by the AIP and CEPI (China National Export Commodities Packaging Research Institute), were back in China to once again provide an intensive week of packaging technology training. This year there were 54 attendees, made up from industry, students, as well as academia (lecturers) from various universities in China involved in Packaging Design or Packaging Science. We used the facilities of a Jiangnan University, in Wuxi.

    Coles becomes Australia’s first national supermarket retailer to introduce meat packaging made entirely from a combination of recycled and renewable material

    Coles will be the first national supermarket retailer in Australia to introduce recyclable packaging made entirely from a combination of recycled and renewable material for a wide range of its Coles Brand fresh meat and poultry products. By purchasing an expected 121 million recyclable meat and poultry trays in 2018 from renowned Australian manufacturer Plantic Technologies, Coles is aiming to use the equivalent of 150 million recycled water bottles to combat Australia’s plastic waste.

    As a part of the Australian Institute of Packaging’s commitment to the SAVE FOOD Initiative by FAO, the National Food Waste Strategy, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12:3 the Institute is focused on education and training programs that can assist with minimising food waste and loss globally. With this, the AIP developed a half-day training course on The Role of Packaging in Minimising Food Waste which they ran in July in New South Wales.

    Television producer Jerry Bruckheimer may well have visited the Orora Research and Technology Centre to get inspiration for the long running series Crime Scene Investigation more commonly referred to as CSI. Rafik Faltas, Centre Manager hosted a select group of packaging professionals from the Institute who visited the Orora Fibre Packaging Research and Technology centre in the Melbourne suburb of Scoresby. Jim Selway a long time member of AIP was the tour guide.

    AIP Save Food Packaging Award acknowledged at national food waste strategy launch

    During the launch of the Australian Government National Food Waste Strategy in November by the Department of the Environment and Energy the Minister, Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, acknowledged the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) for the development of their innovative Save Food Packaging Design Award. The AIP was the first Institute in the world to develop the Save Food Packaging Award; which is now an international award category in the WorldStar Packaging Awards.

    Simplot Australia has made history as the first company in Australia to successfully have five packaging professionals attain the Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation. This achievement was led by Jason Goode FAIP, Group Packaging and Process Improvement Manager, who had a vision to see his entire packaging team attain the CPP designation together and is a part of Simplot Australia’s support and encouragement for continued professional development of their staff. Offered through the AIP, the CPP designation is the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals.

    A year later the AIP, supported by the WPO and CEPI (China National Export Commodities Packaging Research Institute, full member of WPO) was back in China to train. There were 54 attendees, made up from industry as well as academia (lecturers) from various universities in China involved in Packaging Design or Packaging Graphics. We used the facilities of a Sechuan University, in Chengdu. Chengdu, the home to 15 million people is situated in south western China, famously known for the panda bears.

The Master course is a joint initiative between the University of Melbourne and the AIP.

    Packaging technology training in Kenya

    It was wonderful for the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) to be in Nairobi, Kenya in August 2017 to offer Residential Packaging Technology (RPT) to the Institute of Packaging Professionals Kenya (IoPPK) for 3 days. Whilst Kenya is renowned for its animals, Prof Pierre Pienaar and Kishan Singh were in the country to impart knowledge and ensure those attending the course became more informed about the science and technology of packaging and its important role in society.

    The APPMA are very proud to announce the winner of the eight annual scholarship program which enables one person each year the opportunity to undertake a Diploma in Packaging Technology to the value of $9000. The Diploma in Packaging Technology prepares students to take responsibility for packaging operations at any level through the supply chain.     For the AIP to remain relevant the Institute needs to ensure that it is offering something for everyone and 2015 has certainly been an indication that we have delivered on this commitment. The AIP has introduced a signifcant amount of new initiatives and educational offerings this year including our new partnership with the IoPP in the US, the Certifed Packaging Professional designation, the bite-sized modules for the Fundamentals of Packaging Technology course, availability of international textbooks for our members and the Master of Food and Packaging Innovation course.

    The Australian Institute of Packaging will be introducing a new half-day training course on the Introduction to Product Identification. The course presenter will be Mark Dingley, General Manager – Operations, Matthews Australasia and the first course will be held on Thursday 22nd October at 1330 Ferntree Gully Road, Scoresby VIC. This course will provide an insight into product identification requirements through the supply chain and the technology needed to achieve compliance, as well as process improvements.

    Over 380 people were in attendance at the Crown Towers when the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) announced the winners for the 2015 APPMA Industry Excellence Awards, supported by Agility, Midway Metals, PKN and SMC Australia. Award categories included Best New Product Award, APPMA Scholarship, Export Achievement Award, Design Achievement Award, Imported Equipment Award and the Customer Partnership Award.

    AIP-IoPP partnership elevates Certified Packaging Professional to an internationally recognized mark

    The Certified Packaging Professional designation will become the leading mark of excellence internationally and a must-have recognition of industry proficiency and achievement for packaging professionals under a new partnership announced by the IoPP in the US and the AIP. IoPP and AIP will mutually recognize CPP as the gold standard of broad packaging proficiency under a program in which AIP members will join qualifying IoPP members as being eligible for certification.

    The AIP recently recognized five members who have contributed over 125 years of service to the Institute and the packaging industry. The five recipients were Peter Hull MAIP, Technical Manager, Ardagh Group, Gregory Johnson MAIP, Product Development Manager, Visy Board, Mitchell McDonald MAIP, Key Account Manager, Amcor Flexibles, Andrew Preston MAIP, Appointment Group and Tony Whelan MAIP, Regional Sales Manager, Ulma Packaging.

    Generally the theme of a meeting is around one discipline but when eminent presenters come to discuss the "Outlook for Australian Business after the Resources Boom" and the "Future of Packaging White Paper" a whole gamut of topics comes under consideration. David de Garis Director and Senior Economist National Australia Bank (NAB) and Tanya Barden Director of Sustainability, Trade and Innovation at Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC) were the two experts who delivered many thought provoking snippets.
